THE POET NEVER SLEEPS

The poet never sleeps,
for she labors while she dreams,
birthing night's magical child
into the light of day.

TENTS

We are like temporary tents
in the marketplace,
selling from sunup
to sundown,
until we move on
to another town.

GATEKEEPER

I laughed at your legend,
but now I feel your forceful presence,
as we struggle to save the land
from the awesome menace
of an angry, risen sea.

SKATING

Where I grew up
there was more concrete
and hardwood
than ice.
But it came to
the same thing:
balance,
exuberance,
pleasure in skill,
mastery achieved,
joy in movement,
near-absence
of friction,
and staying
always
upright
and on
or above
the surface.
Skating
means no
impediments.

SIX MORE

Archery set,
target arrows,
hunting
pigeons
for
food.
How
did this
happen?
Can't
remember.
Need
six more
birds.
