I believed in leprechauns
when I was a child.
I believed in fairy rings
and elven spells.
and even knew
that you must say
"Bhfuil thú ceart?"
to one who has been
entranced, to bring
them out of it.
I knew these things
with a surety
when I was seven.
Now I know
that those leprechauns
were as real as
the poverty in my
life, as real
as an encroaching,
deadened world.
Oh, do not say
the un-entrancing
words!
