He reads the trees
as you would read
a book,
but what he sees
at second look
he may not tell.
Still he knows
that in the end,
all is well.

Poet in the light of morning sun,
his battles have been lost and won,
and now he spends his days
counting the ways of his gratitude
in hero lays
or ragged verse,
or what is worse,
perhaps,
in silence.
