I CAN'T BRING PEACE TO THE WORLD

I can't bring peace to the world,
but I can be a person of peace.
If it must start somewhere,
then let it be here.
Turning my back on war,
I can learn instead to live,
and though I can't forget,
I can learn still to forgive.

THE SISTERS WERE SEPARATED

The sisters were separated
by thousands of miles
in the days before air mail.
Communication
was a matter
of many weeks.

By sail
their letters
passed back and forth
for years,
in a long and loving
conversation,
punctuated
by tears,
interrupted
by smiles.

Their correspondence
survived
to the modern age,
and I remember the day
when the shamrocks
arrived,
alive.
