I am happy to announce that, in a little less than two years of existence, this poetry blog has had 45,000 visits. These visits have come from over seventy countries, on all continents except Antarctica. Those who say that no one reads poetry anymore are wrong.
The blog, to be sure, contains more than just poetry. There are also short prose entries, and a lot of photography. I expect the poetry, the prose, and the photography to increase, to improve in quality, and to become more diverse. In the meantime, I thank you all for making this blog a success.

Occipit IV - Later I Learned in Meticulous Verse
Later I learned in meticulous verse,
Before there were Brahmi lines.
My memory held all science and art,
And holds it still in part.
Before there were Brahmi lines.
My memory held all science and art,
And holds it still in part.
Occipit III - Naked I Lived Among the Trees
Naked I lived among the trees,
With a language long since gone.
Of politics I had no need,
I could not write or read.
With a language long since gone.
Of politics I had no need,
I could not write or read.
Occipit II - And Hebrew, Too, Is Mine to Know
And Hebrew, too, is mine to know,
It does not strain the soul.
The cap I wore has been mislaid,
But the memory lives somehow.
It does not strain the soul.
The cap I wore has been mislaid,
But the memory lives somehow.
Occipit I - That I Lived in a Latin Time
That I lived in a Latin time
Is a truth that cannot be doubted.
By that fact no root is routed,
Nor other tongue is slighted.
Is a truth that cannot be doubted.
By that fact no root is routed,
Nor other tongue is slighted.

Gymnosophia LXIX - I'll Celebrate
I'll celebrate my seventy-six years,
and why not?
I'm older but wiser,
still healthy,
still ready
for whatever
is coming.
There is no way to prepare
for anything,
except the lessons
of these years,
and of
millennia.

Tomorrow is the first day of spring here in the Southern Hemisphere. The high temperature today was 81F (27C). Beautiful, beautiful day. They are forecasting a "severe storm" for tomorrow. Besides being the first day of spring, tomorrow is my birthday. But because of the spectacularly good weather today and the storm forecast for tomorrow, we decided to celebrate today. It was a great decision.
At first we planned to go to Valizas, a hippie beach town five km. south of here, where there is a very good restaurant. But Sandy chose to drive through our little Aguas Dulces on the way out, which was another great decision. (We've been here at our beach house since Thursday afternoon, and will be going back to Atlántida on Monday.) We were surprised to find that Frog's, one of our favorite Aguas Dulces restaurants, and arguably the best, was open for lunch although we are in the off-season.
Anyway, to make a long story shorter, the combination of the wonderful weather, great music on their sound system (Blues,Klezmer, and Bossa Nova), wonderful food, artesanal beer (I know, it's a Spanish word, sorry) and a delightful chat with Marta, wife of Miguel, the owner, plus solicitous service from our favorite waitress, made everything just perfect.
Both before and after that, we spent delicious time on our deck overlooking the ocean. We also had the pleasure of taking our doggie, Betty, on a couple of beach walks, on which she romped in the water, getting her belly and legs totally soaked. A good time was had by all.
I have to say that this was one of the best birthdays I've had in years, and I savored and thoroughly enjoyed every bit of it. Maybe I should start celebrating it on the 22nd instead of the 23rd as a regular thing--it seems to work out well.

Gymnosophia LXVIII - Concretion
A concretion
of sandstone
and small shells
holds many surprises.
At first we don't
realize
that its base
is a single,
ribbed and ancient
seashell.
A 76-year-old man
sits at his computer desk,
with a beach specimen
before him.
At first we don't
realize
that his nudity
is only an outer layer,
supported by
millennia.

This Tree (with translations)
This tree has many roots,
and they go in all directions.
If you cut off
any of the roots,
the tree
will be weakened.
If you cut them all
off, it will die.
It is an old tree,
native to many lands.
Its leaves and branches
give shade
to all.

Viele Wurzeln hat dieser Baum,
sie gehen in alle Richtungen.
Schneide eine der Wurzeln
und der Baum wird geschwächt -
Schneide sie alle und er stirbt.
Ein alter Baum ist es,
in vielen Ländern zuhause.
Seine Blätter und Zweige
spenden Schatten
für alle.

Tá go leor fréamhacha ag an gcrann seo, agus téann siad ar gach bealach .. Má ghearrann tú amach aon cheann de na fréamhacha, an crann a lagú. Má ghearrann tú iad go léir as, beidh sé bás. Is crann d'aois é, sa bhaile i go leor tailte. A duilleoga agus a craobhacha scáth a thabhairt do gach duine.

VERBA ORIS EIUS (Ps. 35 (36), v. 4-6 (3-5))
The words of his mouth
are iniquity and lies,
he has not wished to understand
that he could do good,
he has meditated mischief
while in his bed,
he has stood in all paths
that are not good,
but evil
he has not hated.
Lord, your mercy extends
to the heavens,
and your truth
unto the clouds,
and your justice
is like the mountains
of God.

I do not have a Cherokee name. Many other people who have more Cherokee blood than I have also do not have a Cherokee name. One reason is because the Cherokee people are not going away, but the Cherokee language is slowly going away. Forty years ago the language had 26,000 speakers. It now has 12,000. When there is no Cherokee language, there will be no Cherokee names. But if the Cherokee people have the Udugi ("Hope") language, they will have hope.

William, sitting across the corner of the table from me, poured a shot of Jameson (not the first) into my glass. "Now," he said, settling back into his chair, "I want to hear you say, 'I forgive the British.'"
William Murphy, a fine man, is the husband of my dear cousin Nano. We were sitting in their house in Midleton, East Cork. The year was 2016, and it was my first trip to Ireland.
He wanted me to say that I forgave the British for all the terrible things they had done in Ireland. I think William knew, or at least intuited, that my grandmother, who had left Ireland as a young woman and lost three brothers to tuberculosis because of the harsh conditions imposed by the British, had been fierce and implacable on the subject, and had instilled those feelings into me when I was a boy.
I knew where William was coming from. We don'r want any more troubles like that. We want to get on with life, and put all that behind us.
But my grandmother had taught me too well. I was carrying wounds, the wounds of all Ireland, from before I was born. Those wounds had not healed, did not know how to heal. I guess William was trying to help me to heal them, as they had all had to try to do.
Every emotion went through me. I wanted to satisfy William by saying the words, but those words would not come out, any more than they would have come out from my grandmother. Finally, after a bit more Jameson, I said,"I don't forgive the British of my grandmother's day for the terrible things that they did, but I forgive the British of today, who have done nothing."
This apparently satisfied William, and he let me off the hook. His daughter asked me if I would ever consider visiting Northern Ireland. She said she had done so, and it was very strange to see the red postboxes and all that. I thought about her question, and then I told her no, I would not go there. But I knew that if I had been raised in Ireland, I would have gone there as a young man, and probably would not have come back alive.

The Bench
Sitting on that bench,
I felt at home,
at peace.
I felt the presence
of my grandmother,
my great-aunt,
and my "other"
family.
I'm not rich enough
to live there,
but neither was
my grandmother,
whose foot left the ground
in Guileen,
and never returned.
She would
understand.

While we're on the subject of statistics, this poetry blog has had visits from approximately 70 countries. The top ten are: the United States, Canada, Uruguay, Germany, Russia, France, Ireland, Brazil, a Middle Eastern country whose privacy I will respect, and Ukraine, in that order. A country that almost made the list but didn't quite is Poland. Other important contributors of visits would be Portugal, Denmark, Spain, the United Kingdom, and Argentina. Recently there have been huge numbers of visits from Unknown Region (probably China, through VPN). I am happy to see that India is also becoming a significant visitor. Under-represented areas would be sub-Saharan Africa and the Andean parts of South America.
Thanks to everyone, in every country, who has visited this blog. If anyone tells you that no one reads poetry anymore, don't believe them.

I am happy to announce that this poetry blog has now received 44,000 visits since its inception. My hope is that it will reach 45,000 by the time it is two years old (in early October 2018). Thanks to all of you for your interest and support.
I you look at my profile on most social media platforms that I use (currently Google Plus, Facebook, Ello, and Diaspora), you will see that I describe myself as "poet, translator, naturist, and feminist, currently living in Uruguay." I think all of these are still true, although the last descriptor is subject to change. If all goes well in the midterm elections in the US (and by that I mean a Blue Wave), we will return, this time to Florida.
As you will probably have noticed, I'm still posting in Udugi. It's dear to my heart, so will no doubt continue. Please don't try to use it for serious privacy purposes. I am doing my best to teach it to those who want to learn, and in any case, a Cherokee speaker can understand most of it. There is nothing secret about it.
I'll talk to you all again when we reach 45,000. In the meantime, be well, and healthy, and happy.

Gymnosophia LXV - "Adam" Is Thrown Out of the Garden
"eiecitque Adam
et conlocavit ante paradisum voluptatis
cherubin et flammeum gladium. . . "
--Genesis 3:24
For all my sisters and brothers.
"Adam" is thrown out
of the Garden,
there is no need,
it seems,
to mention Eve.
Who, or what,
is the "flaming sword?"
Is it not ourselves
and what we have built?
Is it not the things
that humans created
and Adam named?
Is it not Adam himself,
the only one the ancients found
worth mentioning,
with all his pomp
and privilege,
that closed the gates
of Paradise?
Yes, it is only ourselves,
and what we have created,
that bar us
from the Garden.
Stand down Angel,
and put by
thy sword,
for we,
female and male,
have found the key,
together,
and would enter.
et conlocavit ante paradisum voluptatis
cherubin et flammeum gladium. . . "

I am obsessed with writing. It isn't much different from an opioid addiction, but it is legal, and no one is profiting from me except the makers of pens, notebooks, and computers. It has become something I have to do, and I can't stop.
It will never make me rich, but sometimes there is a payback. I try to break out of a bankrupt Western culture, translating Kashmiri and Sanskrit, writing in Udugi, and then, when I write something like Gymnosophia LXIII - And Adam Rested (published today, 11 September 2018), I am forced to acknowledge the depth of my European roots and cultural heritage. I may reject much of it, but it is still there.
But writing makes things clearer. I can see where we went wrong. It was pretty close to Genesis 2:21, so it was a long time ago. This culture is based on patriarchy, machismo, and male privilege. I have rejected it and actively resisted it for forty-five years, but it sure as hell is there.
Until we get past the mistakes that the ancients made in writing about Adam and Eve, and the Garden of Eden, we can never go back to it.

Gymnosophia LXIII - And Adam Rested (+ptl, es, fr)
"inmisit ergo Dominus Deus soporem in Adam"
--Genesis 2:21
For all my sisters.
And Adam rested,
having given names
to all the creatures
the Lord had created.
Tomorrow, with an
equal companion,
as naked as he
and also unashamed,
he would begin
to give names
to the rest.
He would give names
to the things created
by mankind: shame,
clothing, jealousy,
murder, deceit,
rape, slavery,
prostitution,
torture,
greed,
and war.
But it wasn't
as we imagine.
Adam spoke neither
English, nor Latin,
nor even Hebrew.
His mouth was
full of clicks,
his skin was dark,
and he was very,
very short.
His proto-Pygmy
language has not
survived,
nor any of the words
that he created.
This much of the story
is true,
the rest distorted,
for from an X
we can make a Y
if a leg of the X
is only shortened,
but the opposite
we cannot do.
And what of Eve?
She had no need
of all those names,
but knew the use
and place
of every thing.
She made her
partner's life
worthwhile.
[portunhol surenho]
Para todas as minhas irmanas.
Y Adam descansou
tendo dado nomes
para todas as criaturas
que o Senhor havia criado.
Amanhá, com uma
companheira igual,
tan nua quanto ele
y também sem vergonha,
ele iria comesar
dar nomes
para o resto.
Ele daria nomes
para as coisas criadas
pela humanidade: vergonha,
roupas, ciúme,
assassinato, engano,
estupro, escravitud,
prostitución,
tortura,
avidez,
y guerra.
Mas non foi
como imaginamos.
Adán non falou
inglês, nem latim,
nem mesmo hebraico.
Sua boca estava
cheia de cliques
sua pele estava escura
y ele era muito,
muito curto.
Seu proto-pigmeu
idioma non tem
sobrevivido,
nem qualquera das palavras
que ele criou.
Esta parte da historia
é verdade,
o resto distorcido,
porque de um X
nós podemos fazer um Y
se uma perna do X
só é encurtado,
mas u oposto
non podemos fazer.
Y o que de Eva?
Ela non precisava
todos essos nomes,
mas sabía o uso
y lugar
de tudo.
Ela fez que a
vida do parceiro
valgara la pena.
[español]
Para todas mis hermanas.
Y Adán descansó,
habiendo dado nombres
a todas las criaturas
que el Señor había creado.
Mañana, con una
compañera igual,
tan desnuda como él,

él comenzaría
dar nombres
a los demás.
Él daría nombres
a las cosas creadas
por la humanidad: vergüenza,
ropa, celos,
asesinato, engaño,
violación, esclavitud,
prostitución,
tortura,
codicia,
y guerra.
Pero no fue
como nos imaginamos.
Adán no habló ni
inglés, ni latino,
ni siquiera hebreo.
Su boca era
llena de clics,
su piel era oscura,
y él era muy,

sobrevivido,
ni ninguna de las palabras

Esta parte de la historia
es verdad,
el resto distorsionado,
porque de una X
podemos hacer una Y
si una pierna de la X
solo se acorta,
pero lo opuesto
no podemos hacer.
¿Y qué hay de Eva?
Ella no tenía necesidad
de todos esos nombres,
pero sabía el uso
y lugar
de todo.
Ella hizo que
la vida del compañero
valgara la pena.

avidez,
y guerra.
Mas non foi
como imaginamos.
Adán non falou
inglês, nem latim,
nem mesmo hebraico.
Sua boca estava
cheia de cliques
sua pele estava escura
y ele era muito,
muito curto.
Seu proto-pigmeu
idioma non tem
sobrevivido,
nem qualquera das palavras
que ele criou.
Esta parte da historia
é verdade,
o resto distorcido,
porque de um X
nós podemos fazer um Y
se uma perna do X
só é encurtado,
mas u oposto
non podemos fazer.
Y o que de Eva?
Ela non precisava
todos essos nomes,
mas sabía o uso
y lugar
de tudo.
Ela fez que a
vida do parceiro
valgara la pena.
[español]
Para todas mis hermanas.
Y Adán descansó,
habiendo dado nombres
a todas las criaturas
que el Señor había creado.
Mañana, con una
compañera igual,
tan desnuda como él,
y también sin vergüenza,
él comenzaría
dar nombres
a los demás.
Él daría nombres
a las cosas creadas
por la humanidad: vergüenza,
ropa, celos,
asesinato, engaño,
violación, esclavitud,
prostitución,
tortura,
codicia,
y guerra.
Pero no fue
como nos imaginamos.
Adán no habló ni
inglés, ni latino,
ni siquiera hebreo.
Su boca era
llena de clics,
su piel era oscura,
y él era muy,
muy corto.
Su proto-pigmeo
idioma no ha
sobrevivido,
ni ninguna de las palabras
que él creó.
Esta parte de la historia
es verdad,
el resto distorsionado,
porque de una X
podemos hacer una Y
si una pierna de la X
solo se acorta,
pero lo opuesto
no podemos hacer.
¿Y qué hay de Eva?
Ella no tenía necesidad
de todos esos nombres,
pero sabía el uso
y lugar
de todo.
Ella hizo que
la vida del compañero
valgara la pena.
[français]
Pour toutes mes soeurs.
Et Adam se reposa,
ayant donné des noms
à toutes les créatures
que le Seigneur avait créé.
Demain, avec une
compagne égale,
aussi nue que lui
et aussi sans honte,
il commencerait
donner des noms
au reste.
Il donnerait des noms
aux choses créées
par l'humanité: honte,
vêtements, jalousie,
meurtre, tromperie,
viol, esclavage,
la prostitution,
torture,
avidité,
et la guerre.
Mais ce n'était pas
comme nous l'imaginons.
Adam n'a pas parlé
anglais, ni latin,
ni même l'hébreu.
Sa bouche était
pleine de clics,
sa peau était sombre,
et il était très,
très court.
Son proto-pygmée
langage n'a pas
survécu,
ni aucun des mots
qu'il a créé.
Cette partie de l'histoire
est vrai,
le reste déformé,
parce que d'un X
on peut faire un Y
si une jambe du X
est seulement raccourci,
mais le contraire
nous ne pouvons pas faire.
Et qu'en est-il d'Eve?
Elle n'avait pas besoin
de tous ces noms,
mais connaissait l'usage
et place
de tout.
Elle a fait
la vie du partenaire
digne d'intérêt.
