Nirvana Shatakam of Shankara - English Translation Only (new)

I am neither mind nor intelligence nor ego nor memory,

neither ears nor tongue nor nose nor eyes.

Neither am I the sky nor the earth, nor fire nor wind.

In the form of blissful consciousness, I am Shiva, I am Shiva.  1

I am neither to be understood as prana nor as the five kinds of breath,

nor the seven materials nor the five sheaths;

neither am I the organs of speech, elimination, motion, grasping, or procreation.

In the form of blissful consciousness, I am Shiva, I am Shiva.  2

I am not affected by aversion or attachment, I have neither greed nor delusion,

neither egotism nor jealousy.

I have no duty nor objects of desire nor desire itself nor liberation.

In the form of blissful consciousness, I am Shiva, I am Shiva.  3

I am neither virtue nor vice, neither pleasure nor pain,

neither mantra nor holy shrine, neither scriptures nor sacrifices.

Neither am I enjoyment nor its object, nor the enjoyer.

In the form of blissful consciousness, I am Shiva, I am Shiva.  4

I have neither death nor its fear, neither caste nor its distinctions,

nor have I father or mother, or any birth.

I have neither relations nor friends, neither guru nor disciple.

In the form of blissful consciousness, I am Shiva, I am Shiva.  5

I am without change, I am without form.

Permeating the basis of all, I am everywhere and behind all the senses.

I am always in equilibrium, and have neither liberation nor attachment.

In the form of blissful consciousness, I am Shiva, I am Shiva.  6

Is Australia Counted in the Blog Statistics?

A friend of mine in Australia has questioned whether her visits to this blog were being counted, as she seemed to never see Australia listed in the blog statistics. But she had, for reasons beyond her control, fallen behind in responding to posts on social media. Suddenly, she rectified that situation, and just as suddenly I had 31 unread notifications on Diaspora. Is Australia counted, the answer is a resounding "yes," as can be seen from these graphics;

The list of countries produced by the Blogger (blogspot) software is a "top ten" list, and it can't show everything. At the bottom we see "otro" (other), with the number 3. Since there is already a country listed (Lithuania) that had only one page-view, we know that there were three other countries with a single page view that could not be listed. So twelve countries were sources of page-views, but only nine of them were named.

Most of the time, a country has to be the source of more than a single page-view to be named on the list. Thirty-one views put Oz on the map, and on the list.

There are some strange things about these country statistics, though. For example, you almost never see China, which has roughly a quarter of the world's population, on the list. That is because China has its own internet, and does not allow ordinary citizens to access "our" internet. I do occasionally see two or three visits from China, probably from individuals with special privileges or those able to circumvent the ban through technical means.

There are also some illogical points. Visits from Réunion (a Department of France) are shown separately, as "Réunion." But I've never seen a separate listing for Tahiti or French Polynesia. States and Territories of the US are not shown separately, so one never sees a listing for Puerto Rico. More consistency would be good, but I like seeing Réunion separately, since I have a friend there.

As We Approach 120,000 Visits

Soon after getting up this morning, I checked the statistics for this blog, as I always do. Total visits (page-views, actually) had increased to 119, 708. In the prior 24-hour period there had been 145 visits. It's a healthy number, above average, but not a huge one. The only surprise, actually, was that the greatest number of page-views had come from Vietnam, a country that normally does not produce more than one or two views at a time. Here is the relevant graphic:

What does this mean? Don't know, to tell you the truth. The largest spike in activity came between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m., my local time (EDT), as can be seen in the graph below:

The activity peak around 5 p.m. was due to the initial publication of my most recent entry, which garnered eighteen visits to the blog. The remainder of the activity through the 24-hour period came from the countries listed in the first graphic. More on this later.

I have a theory about the high level of interest from Vietnam. It is accompanied by an uptick in interest from Japan, Thailand, South Korea, and a few other countries where Buddhism is a prominent social, religious, and philosophical influence. Lately my posting has sounded more Buddhistic, but the influence is actually from the Advaita Vedanta of India. There are, of course, other possibilities. For example, Vietnam has a well established book-publishing industry, and someone there may be planning to pirate some of "my" work (which is really the Muse's work, and my play).

The rest of the 24-hour activity is pretty typical. My most loyal readers are in the US, Germany, France, Portugal, Sweden, and the Netherlands, along with Belgium, Spain, Italy, the UK, Poland, Romania, and other countries of Europe. Among these, the US dominates by quite a bit. Within the US, a single "reader" accounts for perhaps 2/3 of the activity. I strongly suspect that "reader" of being another would-be pirate. That is not, however, the only possibility.

This blog allows comments directly on the individual entries. The blog now contains more than 2,500 entries, but there are so far only 130 comments. I would love it if readers would enlighten me as to the reasons for their interest, but the bottom line is that I appreciate that interest, and thank you all for it.
