dEvIkavacham 8

यैस्तु भक्त्या स्मृता नित्यं तॆषां वृद्धिः प्रजायतॆ | 
यॆ त्वां स्मरन्ति दॆवॆशि रक्षसि तान्न संशयः || 8 ||

yaistu bhaktyA smRRitA nityaM tEShAM vRRiddhiH prajAyatE |
yE tvAM smaranti dEvEshi rakShasi tAnna saMshayaH || 8 ||

Those who always remember her with devotion will have success.
O Queen of the Devis, you protect those who remember you, of that there is no doubt.



dEvIkavacham 7

न तॆषां जायतॆ किञ्चिदशुभं रणसङ्कटॆ | 
आपदं न च पश्यन्ति शोकदुःखभयङ्करीम् || 7 ||

na tEShAM jAyatE kiJNchidashubhaM raNasaN^kaTE |
ApadaM na cha pashyanti shokaduHkhabhayaN^karIm || 7 ||

no inauspiciousness will overcome them amid the danger of war,
nor will they see any misfortune causing grief, hardship, or fear.

Rumer singing "Aretha,"
magnificent,
sun three hours
high,
dog curled up
on floor tiles,
breakfast almost
ready.
Tide is high,
surf medium.
Is this
heaven?

"How long,"
Rumer sings,
"have you been
hiding?"

Sandy says,
"It's ready."

Curried eggs.
Heaven.

अग्निना दह्यमानास्तु शत्रुमध्यगता रणॆ | 
विशमॆ दुर्गमॆ चैव भयार्ताः शरणं गताः || 6 ||

agninA dahyamAnAstu shatrumadhyagatA raNE |
vishamE durgamE chaiva bhayArtAH sharaNaM gatAH || 6 ||

When threatened by fire or in the midst of enemies in war,
when feeling fear in difficulty or adversity, those who take refuge (in the DevI)

dEvIkavacham 5

नवमं सिद्धिदात्री च नवदुर्गाः प्रकीर्तिताः | 
उक्तान्यॆतानि नामानि ब्रह्मणैव महात्मना || 5 ||

navamaM siddhidAtrI cha navadurgAH prakIrtitAH |
uktAnyEtAni nAmAni brahmaNaiva mahAtmanA || 5 ||

And the ninth is siddhidAtrI. Nine Durgas are revealed.
All these names have been spoken by the great-souled BrahmA.

पञ्चमं स्कन्दमातॆति षष्ठं कात्यायनी तथा | 
सप्तमं कालरात्रिश्च महागौरीति चाष्टमम् || 4 ||


paJNchamaM skandamAtEti ShaShThaM kAtyAyanI tathA |
saptamaM kAlarAtrishcha mahAgaurIti chAShTamam || 4 ||

Fifth, she is called skandamAta, sixth kAtyAyanI,
seventh kAlarAtri, eighth mahAgaurI || 4 ||

प्रथमं शैलपुत्रीति द्वितीयं ब्रह्मचारिणी | 
तृतीयं चन्द्रघण्टॆति कूष्माण्डॆति चतुर्थकम् || 3 ||

prathamaM shailaputrIti dvitIyaM brahmachAriNI |
tRRitIyaM chandraghaNTEti kUShmANDEti chaturthakam || 3 ||

First, she is called shailaputrI; second, she is called brahmachAriNI;
third, she is called chandraghaNTA; fourth, she is called kUShmANDA.
