Saying 79: Listening to the Message

A woman in the crowd said to him, "Blessed is the womb that bore you, and the breasts that nourished you."

He said to [her], "Blessed are those who have listened to the message of the Father and kept it, because there will be days when you'll say, 'Blessed is the womb that didn't conceive and the breasts that haven't given milk.'"

Saying 80: The World is a Body

This Saying, along with its doublet, Saying 56, is extremely problematic. April D. DeConick has an excellent discussion of these Sayings on pp. 192-3 and 244-5 of THE ORIGINAL GOSPEL OF THOMAS IN TRANSLATION (op. cit.). In her opinion, the Coptic form of these two Sayings is pretty much nonsense, and they reflect a Semitic substratum which can explain several mistranslations. Finally, she offers an alternative interpretation: 'Whoever has come to know the world <<has mastered the body>>. The world does not deserve the person who <<has mastered the body>>. DeConick considers these two sayings to be accretions reflecting both encratism and hermetism, and dating to the latter half of the first century. Her references concerning the Semitic substratum are themselves worthy of study.

Life Among the Spirits

 

Unexpectedly, they appear,

Aging Project XCIII

 

Aging Project XCIII     81.66 years

I don't have a scales right now, so I don't know my exact weight, but it is less than it should be. I need to bulk up just a little bit.

At last, I am here in Uruguay. Thanks to the help of my good Unitarian Universalist friends of the Church in the Pines, My apartment was emptied on time. Betty is not here with me yet, because she is embroiled in international health regulations. I think she may get here by the end of May.

It is quite cold here, for the Fall. The temp this morning was 45°F/10°C. Still, I feel good and ready for anything.

My friend Emily, whom I have known for ten years, is here, helping me to get the house better prepared for a cold winter, and helping me to connect to services and utilities. It can be a bit complicated in the beginning. I already have my internet and telephone (both mobile and fixed) connections, and a bank account. Keeping money in that account will be a bit tricky, unless I switch my Social Security over to Uruguay. That is what we did before, and it just requires going to the consulate, and takes about a month. In the meantime, I can use ATM and credit cards.

Neither I nor Emily cook much, and we are using a great service ("Rico y Sano") that delivers healthy, vegetarian food to your door. Fortunately, they have things that I, being gluten intolerant, can eat. The stores also have some things, including some bread that I believe is made with rice flour, and it says it is "libre de gluten." I would be lost without the help of Emily, so I am grateful to her.
