Curmudgeons

Curmudgeons understand
each other,
yes we do.
But with you gone,
who
can I curmudge
with?

(There is a minimum
age requirement
for true
curmudgery.)

Yakov, Too

You were eight years older than me,
and a century
more difficult.
You are with us now,
guiding us.
You've been called
many things,
but I'll just call you
Mahatma,
Great Soul.

Names

I have many names,
and have had many.
The country where I live
shows my mother's last name;
the country where I was born,
and where she was born,
does not.

Traxler, Hanes,
Jacobson, Bloomquist,
Moore, Neely,
Dunne, Barry,
and before any of these,
Amadoya, Water Beaver.

I pick names out of
the air--
Tiyóhali,
Siquoya Uwetsi,
Devidas,
Kalidas,
Ben Noach,
because without air,
without spirit,
we cannot live.

Lawrence

You were Dad's first cousin,
but he never mentioned you,
said little about James,
your father,
perhaps because you kept alive
what others let die.
On 10 February 1944
you traded Horton,
Kansas, for a bombing run
over Brunswick,
Germany, with the roaring
of the bomber's engines
in your ears.
You would not see
115 East 15th Street
again, nor the girl
you left behind.
They would give your
Service Number,
17128088,
an Air Medal
and a Purple Heart
that you
would never see.
The roaring
of the bomber's engines
has stopped.
10 February 1944
was a Thursday.
Sunrise: 06:12.
Sunset: none.
