New World II

Le passé et l'avenir se battent ;

le champ de bataille est le présent.

Le présent est basé sur le passé,

mais fonce tête baissée vers l'avenir.

Dans cette lutte, ce combat à mort,

le meilleur paradigme gagnera sûrement.

152,000 Visits and a Black Sweatshirt

Yesterday we passed the milestone of 152,000 visits to (page-views in) this blog, which has been in existence for six and a half years. It took a while to get that last thousand visits, because old age seems to be slowing me down. When I started the blog, I often did two or three posts a day, but now it's usually only one per day. Still, I am gratified that my writing and photography are still of interest to people.

Apart from one-off posts, of which there are a fair number, I post regularly in the Aging Project series, which is now up to forty-five parts, and the Synoptica series, which is now, I believe, up to thirty-eight parts. The most recent post in the Synoptica series was very labor-intensive, and was the longest blog entry I had ever created. Now I have to enter some analysis and commentary, to make it all make sense. There is another lengthy blog entry in the works (about 2,000 words), but I'll let it's subject be a surprise, at least for now.

If anyone would like to contribute to this blog, making it a kind of literary-and-photographic-journal, I think that would be an interesting possibility to explore (this idea just now occurred to me).

As always, thanks to all of you for your continued interest and enthusiasm. Merci, gracias, wadó.

Synoptica XXXVIII - The Sources of the Proto-Narrative II

In the world of Lukan Priority, a hypothetical document called the Proto-Narrative (PN) is required. Although we don't have a copy of it, we should be able to say quite a lot about it. It was, for example, probably written in Hebrew. We know this because of Hebraisms in Luke. We should also be able to say something about its sources, in terms of quotations from and references to the Hebrew Bible. If we are successful in doing this, we may also be able to reconstruct it, as has been done for Q, the Sayings source.

The first step in this process will be to weed out as much Q material as possible, leaving principally the narrative elements of the Gospel story. It is often said that all three Synoptics basically follow "the Markan order" (in other words, the PN order), so an easy way to do this "weeding out" is to use the Gospel of Mark for our source-analysis. As it turns out, there are about 100 quotations of or references to verses of the Hebrew Bible in Mark. Here they are, in order of appearance, gleaned from my well-worn copy of the Nestle-Aland NOVUM TESTAMENTUM GRAECE, twenty-fifth editon (NA25). This list may not be complete, but I'm sure that I got most of them.

[Please note: This list has been corrected. In the Psalms, NA25 sometimes follows the Hebrew verse-numbering (counts the "superscript" as a verse) in its citations; at other times, the citation is given as in the KJV/RSV (without counting the superscript as a verse). I did not originally make allowance for this difference. The texts of all of the Psalms citations in the list have, therefore, had to be checked, and corrected where necessary. I have done this, and hope that all Psalms citations in the list are now correct.]

I hope to publish some commentary on this list and its significance, soon.
