OM. Victory to you, O Devi ChAmuNDA, victory to you, destroyer of demons. Victory to you, all-pervading Devi KAlarAtri. salutations be unto you! || 1 ||

Devi Mahatmyam (Glorification of the Goddess) XI.33:

विश्वेश्वरि त्वं परिपासि विश्वं विश्वात्मिका धारयसीति विश्वम्
विश्वेशवन्द्या भवती भवन्ति विश्वाश्रया ये त्वयि भक्तिनम्राः ||33||

vishvEshvari tvaM paripAsi vishvaM vishvAtmikA dhArayasIti vishvam
vishvEshavandyA bhavatI bhavanti vishvAshrayA yE tvayi bhaktinamrAH ||33||

Oh Queen of the universe, you protect the universe. As the self of the universe, you support the universe. You are the (goddess) worthy to be adored by the Lord of the universe. Those who bow in devotion to you themselves become the refuge of the universe.

has freed me
in every way.

The second, simpler version given here (after "athavA") appears to be the more well known and more commonly used. There may be an initiatory reason for this, I'm not sure. Now we continue with our series of highlights of the Devi Mahatmyam (Glorification of the Goddess), with Chapter XI, verses 3-35, a beautiful hymn of praise known as the Narayani Stuti.

देवि प्रपन्नार्तिहरे प्रसीद
प्रसीद मातर्जगतॊऽखिलस्य
प्रसीद विश्वेश्वरि पाहि विश्वं
त्वमीश्वरी देवि चराचरस्य ||3||

dEvi prapannArtiharE prasIda
prasIda mAtarjagato.akhilasya
prasIda vishvEshvari pAhi vishvaM
tvamIshvarI dEvi charAcharasya ||3||

Oh Devi, you who remove the sufferings of your suppliants, be gracious. Be propitious, oh mother of the whole world. Be gracious, oh mother of the universe. Protect the universe. You are, oh Devi, the ruler of all that is moving and unmoving.


Devi Mahatmyam (Glorification of the Goddess) XI.4:

आधारभूता जगतस्त्वमेका
महीस्वरूपेण यतः स्थितासि
अपां स्वरूपस्थितया त्वयैत-
दाप्यायते कृत्स्नमलङ्घ्यवीर्ये ||4||

AdhArabhUtA jagatastvamEkA
mahIsvarUpENa yataH sthitAsi
apAM svarUpasthitayA tvayaita-
dApyAyatE kRRitsnamalaN^ghyavIryE ||4||

You are the sole substratum of the world, because you subsist in the form of the earth. By you, who exist in the shape of water, all this (universe) is gratified, oh Devi of inviolable valour!


Devi Mahatmyam (Glorification of the Goddess) XI.5:

त्वं वैष्णवी शक्तिरनन्तवीर्या
विश्वस्य बीजं परमासि माया
सम्मॊहितं देवि समस्तमेत-
त्त्वं वै प्रसन्ना भुवि मुक्तिहेतुः ||5||

tvaM vaiShNavI shaktiranantavIryA
vishvasya bIjaM paramAsi mAyA
sammohitaM dEvi samastamEta-
ttvaM vai prasannA bhuvi muktihEtuH ||5||

You are the power of Vishnu, and have endless valour. You are the primeval maya, which is the source of the universe; by you all this (universe) has been thrown into an illusion, oh Devi. If you become gracious, you become the cause of final emancipation in this world.


Devi Mahatmyam (Glorification of the Goddess) XI.6:

विद्याः समस्तास्तवदेवि भेदाः
स्त्रियः समस्ताः सकला जगत्सु
त्वयैकया पूरितमम्बयैतत्
का ते स्तुतिः स्तव्यपरापरॊक्तिः ||6||

vidyAH samastAstavadEvi bhEdAH
striyaH samastAH sakalA jagatsu
tvayaikayA pUritamambayaitat
kA tE stutiH stavyaparAparoktiH ||6||

All kinds of wisdom are your aspects, oh Devi; so are all women in the world, endowed with various attributes. By you alone, the Mother, this world is filled. What praise can there be for you who are of the nature of praise for all that is praiseworthy?


Devi Mahatmyam (Glorification of the Goddess) XI.7:

सर्वभूता यदा देवी भुक्तिमुक्तिप्रदायिनी
त्वं स्तुता स्तुतये का वा भवन्तु परमॊक्तयः ||7||

sarvabhUtA yadA dEvI bhuktimuktipradAyinI
tvaM stutA stutayE kA vA bhavantu paramoktayaH ||7||

When you have been lauded as the embodiment of all beings, the Devi, and bestower of enjoyment and liberation, what words, however excellent, can praise you?


Devi Mahatmyam (Glorification of the Goddess) XI.8:

सर्वस्य बुद्धिरूपेण जनस्य हॄदि संस्थिते
स्वर्गापवर्गदे देवि नारायणि नमॊऽस्तु ते ||8||

sarvasya buddhirUpENa janasya hRRIdi saMsthitE
svargApavargadE dEvi nArAyaNi namo.astu tE ||8||

Salutation to you, oh Devi Narayani, oh you who abide as intelligence in the hearts of all creatures, and bestow enjoyment and liberation.


Devi Mahatmyam (Glorification of the Goddess) XI.9:

कलाकाष्ठादिरूपेण परिणामप्रदायिनि
विश्वस्यॊपरतौ शक्ते नारायणि नमॊऽस्तु ते ||9||

kalAkAShThAdirUpENa pariNAmapradAyini
vishvasyoparatau shaktE nArAyaNi namo.astu tE ||9||

Salutation to you, oh Narayani, oh you who, in the form of minutes, moments, and other divisions of time, bring about change in things, and have (thus) the power to destroy the universe.


Devi Mahatmyam (Glorification of the Goddess) XI.10:

सर्वमङ्गलमामाङ्गल्ये शिवे सर्वार्थसाधिके
शरण्ये त्र्यम्बके गौरि नारायणि नमॊऽस्तु ते ||10||

sarvamaN^galamAmAN^galyE shivE sarvArthasAdhikE
sharaNyE tryambakE gauri nArAyaNi namo.astu tE ||10||

Salutation to you, oh Narayani, you who are the good of all good, oh auspicious Devi, who accomplish every object, the giver of refuge, oh three-eyed Gauri!


Devi Mahatmyam (Glorification of the Goddess) XI.11:

सृष्टिस्थितिविनाशानां शक्तिभूते सनातनि
गुणाश्रये गुणमये नारायणि नमॊऽस्तु ते ||11||

sRRiShTisthitivinAshAnAM shaktibhUtE sanAtani
guNAshrayE guNamayE nArAyaNi namo.astu tE ||11||

Salutation to you, oh Narayani, you who have the power of creation, maintenance, and destruction and are eternal. You are the substratum and embodiment of the three gunas (the three "strands," sattva, rajas, and tamas, of which everything is composed).


Devi Mahatmyam (Glorification of the Goddess) XI.12:

शरणागतदीनार्तपरित्राणपरायणे
सर्वस्यार्तिहरे देवि नारायणि नमॊऽस्तु ते ||12||

sharaNAgatadInArtaparitrANaparAyaNE
sarvasyArtiharE dEvi nArAyaNi namo.astu tE ||12||

Salutation to you, oh Narayani, you who are intent on saving the dejected and distressed who take refuge in you, oh Devi, who remove the sufferings of all!


Devi Mahatmyam (Glorification of the Goddess) XI.13:

हंसयुक्तविमानस्थे ब्रह्माणीरूपधारिणि
कौशाम्बःक्षरिके देवि नारायणि नमॊऽस्तु ते ||13||

haMsayuktavimAnasthE brahmANIrUpadhAriNi
kaushAmbaHkSharikE dEvi nArAyaNi namo.astu tE ||13||

Salutation to you, oh Narayani, you who ride in the heavenly chariot yoked with swans and assume the form of Brahmini, oh Devi, who sprinkle water with kusha grass (used for ritual offerings).


Devi Mahatmyam (Glorification of the Goddess) XI.14:

त्रिशूलचन्द्राहिधरे महावृषभवाहिनि
माहेश्वरीस्वरूपेण नारायणि नमॊऽस्तु ते ||14||

trishUlachandrAhidharE mahAvRRiShabhavAhini
mAhEshvarIsvarUpENa nArAyaNi namo.astu tE ||14||

Salutation to you, oh Narayani, you who carry the trident, moon, and serpent, ride a big bull, and have the form of Maheshvari (consort of Maheshvara).


Devi Mahatmyam (Glorification of the Goddess) XI.15:

मयूरकुक्कुटवृते महाशक्तिधरेऽनघे
कौमारीरूपसंस्थाने नारायणि नमॊऽस्तु ते ||15||

mayUrakukkuTavRRitE mahAshaktidharE.anaghE
kaumArIrUpasaMsthAnE nArAyaNi namo.astu tE ||15||

Salutation to you, oh Narayani, you who are attended by peacock and cock, and bear a great spear, you who are sinless and take the form of Kaumari (the shakti of Kumara).


Devi Mahatmyam (Glorification of the Goddess) XI.16:

शङ्खचक्रगदाशार्ङ्गगृहीतपरमायुधे
प्रसीद वैष्णवीरूपे नारायणि नमॊऽस्तु ते ||16||

shaN^khachakragadAshArN^gagRRihItaparamAyudhE
prasIda vaiShNavIrUpE nArAyaNi namo.astu tE ||16||

Salutation to you, oh Narayani, you who hold the great weapons of conch, discus, club, and bow, and take the form of Vaishnavi, be gracious.


Devi Mahatmyam (Glorification of the Goddess) XI.17:

गृहीतॊग्रमहाचक्रेदंष्ट्रॊद्धृतवसुन्धरे
वराहरूपिणि शिवे नरयणि नमॊऽस्तु ते ||17||

gRRihItogramahAchakrEdaMShTroddhRRitavasundharE
varAharUpiNi shivE narayaNi namo.astu tE ||17||

Salutation to you, oh Narayani, you who grasp a huge, formidable discus, and raise up the earth with thy tusk, oh auspicious Devi with the form of Varahi (the shakti of Vishnu in his boar incarnation).


Devi Mahatmyam (Glorification of the Goddess) XI.18:

नृसिंहरूपेणॊग्रेण हन्तुं दैत्यान् कृतॊद्य्मे
त्रैलॊक्यत्राणसहिते नारायणि नमॊऽस्तु ते ||18||

nRRisiMharUpENogrENa hantuM daityAn kRRitodymE
trailokyatrANasahitE nArAyaNi namo.astu tE ||18||

Salutation to you, oh Narayani, you who, in the fierce form of a man-lion, put forth your efforts to slay the daityas, oh you who possess the benevolence of saving the three worlds.


Devi Mahatmyam (Glorification of the Goddess) XI.19:

किरीटिनि महावज्रे सहस्रनयनॊज्ज्वले
वृत्रप्राणहरे चैन्द्रि नारायणि नमॊऽस्तु ते ||19||

karITini mahAvajrE sahasranayanojjvalE
vRRitraprANaharE chaindri nArAyaNi namo.astu tE ||19||

Salutation to you, oh Narayani, you who have a diadem and a great thunderbolt, are dazzling with a thousand eyes, and took away the life of Vritra, oh Aindri (the consort of Indra, the slayer of a demon named Vritra).


Devi Mahatmyam (Glorification of the Goddess) XI.20:

शिवदूतीस्वरूपेण हतदैत्यमहाबले
घॊररूपे महारावे नारायणि नमॊऽस्तु ते ||20||

shivadUtIsvarUpENa hatadaityamahAbalE
ghorarUpE mahArAvE nArAyaNi namo.astu tE ||20||

Salutation to you, oh Narayani, you who in the form of Shivaduti slew the mighty hosts of the daityas, oh you of terrible form and loud throat!


Devi Mahatmyam (Glorification of the Goddess) XI.21:

दंष्ट्राकरालवदने शिरॊमालाविभूषणे
चामुण्डे मुण्डमथने नारायणि नमॊऽस्तु ते ||21||

daMShTrAkarAlavadanE shiromAlAvibhUShaNE
chAmuNDE muNDamathanE nArAyaNi namo.astu tE ||21||

Salutation to you, oh Narayani, you who have a face terrible with tusks, and are adorned with a garland of heads, Chamunda, slayer of Munda!


Devi Mahatmyam (Glorification of the Goddess) XI.22:

लक्ष्मि लज्जे महाविद्ये श्रद्धे पुष्टि स्वधे ध्रुवे
महारात्रि महामाये नारायणि नमॊऽस्तु ते ||22||

lakShmi lajjE mahAvidyE shraddhE puShTi svadhE dhruvE
mahArAtri mahAmAyE nArAyaNi namo.astu tE ||22||

Salutation to you, oh Narayani, you who are good fortune, modesty, great wisdom, faith, nourishment, and Svadhaa (mantra used for oblations to ancestors); oh you who are immovable, great night, and great illusion.


Devi Mahatmyam (Glorification of the Goddess) XI.23:

मेधे सरस्वति वरे भूति बाभ्रवि तामसि
नियते त्वं प्रसीदेशे नारायणि नमॊऽस्तु ते ||23||

mEdhE sarasvati varE bhUti bAbhravi tAmasi
niyatE tvaM prasIdEshE nArAyaNi namo.astu tE ||23||

Salutation to you, oh Narayani, you who are intelligence and Sarasvati, oh best one, prosperity, consort of Vishnu, dark one, nature, be propitious.


Devi Mahatmyam (Glorification of the Goddess) XI.24:

सर्वस्वरूपे सर्वेशे सर्वशक्तिसमन्विते
भयेभ्यस्त्राहि नॊ देवि दुर्गे देवि नमॊऽस्तु ते ||24||

sarvasvarUpE sarvEshE sarvashaktisamanvitE
bhayEbhyastrAhi no dEvi durgE dEvi namo.astu tE ||24||

Oh queen of all, you who exist in the form of all, and possess every might, save us from error, oh Devi. Salutation to you, Devi Durga!


Devi Mahatmyam (Glorification of the Goddess) XI.25:

एतत्ते वदनं सौम्यं लॊचनत्रयबूषितम्
पातु नः सर्वभूतेभ्यः कात्यायनि नमॊऽस्तु ते ||25||

EtattE vadanaM saumyaM lochanatrayabUShitam
pAtu naH sarvabhUtEbhyaH kAtyAyani namo.astu tE ||25||

May this benign countenance of yours, adorned with three eyes, protect us from all fears. Salutation to you, oh Katyayani!


Devi Mahatmyam (Glorification of the Goddess) XI.26:

ज्वालाकरालमत्युग्रमशेषासुरसूदनम्
त्रिशूलं पातु नॊ भीतॆर्भद्रकालि नमॊऽस्तु ते ||26||

jvAlAkarAlamatyugramashEShAsurasUdanam
trishUlaM pAtu no bhIterbhadrakAli namo.astu tE ||26||

Terrible with flames, exceedingly sharp, destroyer of all the asuras, may your trident guard us from fear. Salutation to you, oh Bhadrakali!


Devi Mahatmyam (Glorification of the Goddess) XI.27:

हिनस्ति दैत्यतेजांसि स्वनेनापूर्य या जगत्
सा घण्टा पातु नॊ देवि पापेभ्यॊ नः सुतानिव ||27||

hinasti daityatEjAMsi svanEnApUrya yA jagat
sA ghaNTA pAtu no dEvi pApEbhyo naH sutAniva ||27||

May your bell that fills the world with its ringing, and destroys the prowess of the daityas, guard us, oh Devi, as a mother protects her children, from all evils.


Devi Mahatmyam (Glorification of the Goddess) XI.28:

असुरासृग्वसापङ्कचर्चितस्ते करॊज्ज्वलः
शुभाय खड्गॊ भवतु चण्डिके त्वां नता वयम् ||28||

asurAsRRigvasApaN^kacharchitastE karojjvalaH
shubhAya khaDgo bhavatu chaNDikE tvAM natA vayam ||28||

May your sword, smeared with the mire-like blood and fat of asuras, and gleaming with rays, be for our welfare, oh Chandika, we bow to you.


Devi Mahatmyam (Glorification of the Goddess) XI.29:

रॊगानशेषानपहंसि तुष्टा रुष्टा तु कामान् सकलानभीष्टान्
त्वामाश्रितानां न विपन्नराणां त्वामाश्रिता ह्याश्रयतां प्रयान्ति ||29||

rogAnashEShAnapahaMsi tuShTA ruShTA tu kAmAn sakalAnabhIShTAn
tvAmAshritAnAM na vipannarANAM tvAmAshritA hyAshrayatAM prayAnti ||29||

When satisfied, you destroy all illness; but when angry, you destroy what is desired. No calamity befalls those who have sought you. Those who have sought you become truly a refuge of others.


Devi Mahatmyam (Glorification of the Goddess) XI.30:

एतत्कृतं यत्कदनं त्वयाद्य धर्मद्विषां देवि महासुराणां
रूपैरनेकैर्बहुधात्ममूर्ति कृत्वाम्बिके तत्प्रकरॊति कान्या ||30||

EtatkRRitaM yatkadanaM tvayAdya dharmadviShAM dEvi mahAsurANAM
rUpairanEkairbahudhAtmamUrti kRRitvAmbikE tatprakaroti kAnyA ||30||

This slaughter that you, oh Devi, multiplying your own form into many, have now wrought on the great asuras who hate righteousness, oh Ambikaa, what other (goddess) can do that work?


Devi Mahatmyam (Glorification of the Goddess) XI.31:

विद्यासु शास्त्रेषु विवेकदीपेष्वाद्येषु वाक्येषु च का त्वदन्या
ममत्वगर्तेऽतिमहान्धकारे विभ्रामयत्येतदतीव विश्वम् ||31||

vidyAsu shAstrEShu vivEkadIpEShvAdyEShu vAkyEShu cha kA tvadanyA
mamatvagartE.atimahAndhakArE vibhrAmayatyEtadatIva vishvam ||31||

Who is there other than you in the sciences, in the scriptures, and in the vedic sayings that light the lamp of discrimination? (Still) you cause this universe to whirl around again and again within the dense darkness of the depths of attachment.


Devi Mahatmyam (Glorification of the Goddess) XI.32:

रक्षांसि यत्रॊग्रविषाश्च नागा यत्रारयॊ दस्युबलानि यत्र

दावानलॊ यत्रतथाब्धिमध्ये तत्रस्थिता त्वं परिपासि विश्वम् ||32||

rakShAMsi yatrograviShAshcha nAgA yatrArayo dasyubalAni yatra

dAvAnalo yatratathAbdhimadhyE tatrasthitA tvaM paripAsi vishvam ||32||

Where there are rakshasas and snakes of virulent poison, where there are enemies and hosts of robbers, where forest conflagrations occur, there and in the middle of the sea, you stand and save the world.


Devi Mahatmyam (Glorification of the Goddess) XI.33:

विश्वेश्वरि त्वं परिपासि विश्वं विश्वात्मिका धारयसीति विश्वम्
विश्वेशवन्द्या भवती भवन्ति विश्वाश्रया ये त्वयि भक्तिनम्राः ||33||

vishvEshvari tvaM paripAsi vishvaM vishvAtmikA dhArayasIti vishvam
vishvEshavandyA bhavatI bhavanti vishvAshrayA yE tvayi bhaktinamrAH ||33||

Oh Queen of the universe, you protect the universe. As the self of the universe, you support the universe. You are the (goddess) worthy to be adored by the Lord of the universe. Those who bow in devotion to you themselves become the refuge of the universe.


Devi Mahatmyam (Glorification of the Goddess) XI.34:

देवि प्रसीद परिपालय नॊऽरिभीतेर्नित्यं यथासुरवधादधुनैव सद्यः
पापानि सर्वजगतां प्रशमं नयाशु उत्पातपाकजनितांश्च महॊपसर्गान् ||34||

dEvi prasIda paripAlaya no.aribhItErnityaM yathAsuravadhAdadhunaiva sadyaH
pApAni sarvajagatAM prashamaM nayAshu utpAtapAkajanitAMshcha mahopasargAn
||34||

Oh Devi, be pleased and protect us always from fear of foes, as you have done just now by the slaughter of asuras. And destroy quickly the sins of all worlds and the great calamities that have sprung from the maturing of evil portents.


Devi Mahatmyam (Glorification of the Goddess) XI.35:

प्रणतानां प्रसीद त्वं देवि विश्वार्तिहारिणि
त्रैलॊक्यवासिनामीड्ये लॊकानां वरदा भव ||35||

praNatAnAM prasIda tvaM dEvi vishvArtihAriNi
trailokyavAsinAmIDyE lokAnAM varadA bhava ||35||

Oh Devi, you who remove the afflictions of the universe, be gracious to us who have bowed to you. Oh you worthy of adoration by the dwellers of the three worlds, be boon-giver to the worlds.
